After having re-designed iKreativ completely from the ground up I recently decided to run a simple SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) test to see how far, and how fast I could climb the Google ladder.

So, the test. To get the highest possible listing for 3 specific search terms, ‘Web Design Oldham’, ‘Graphic Design Oldham’, and the broader search term ‘Design Oldham’ in under 1 month.

OpenSuSE 11 install on Acer Aspire One

Well, I decided to buy a Netbook in the form of an Acer Aspire One. Seems like a great little machine, 120GB HDD, 512MB RAM, Dual Core 1.6GHz Intel Atom, and a built-in Webcam. It even comes pre-installed with Linux!

The defaultĀ  installation of Linpus ( basically Fedora Core 8 ) is perfect for what the machine is designed for; web browsing, emailing, messaging etc.. but as a regular Linux user the default install just wasn’t enough, it was just too restricted for my taste.

So that was that, off I went and downloaded the USB / Network install ISO of my favourite distro, OpenSuSE.

HTML errors affecting SEO

Invalid HTML code which has errors within it can affect your search engine ranking. Some Web Designers, and clients alike don’t always realize how much simple page errors can cause a search engine spider to incorrectly index a page or skip the page altogether. Checking your code and links is always a must.

Bad code can hurt your site with the search engines in several ways. Search engines score a page by looking for relevant terms in key HTML components in specific places within a document. If they don’t find them because of typos or other mistakes, the spiders can downgrade your page or leave without reading your whole page.
